Laid-Back Mountain Loop: Marshall Pass

Marshall Pass is a gravel road that can be enjoyed by all likes of adventurers! A short 20 minute drive from Salida, this route is perfect for first time riders & folks looking for a more relaxing ride. You will travel through aspens, pines, and timberline on this easy-going route. As you approach the top of the pass there will be restrooms on the right side of the road. Nearby you can explore a historic cattlemen’s cabin ( perfect place for a picnic lunch )! Venture onward and turn left on Poncha Creek Rd (203). This part of the trail is rutted in places and can get slippery when wet, so take it at a slower pace. You will loop back onto Marshall Pass Rd (200) where you will take a right. Follow the road back down to the Shirley Trailhead and Parking Site.

This loop is about 20 miles long ( 3-5 hours ).

Trip to Tincup Town

Tour a historic mountain town & drive through Mirror Lake on this beautiful high-mountain pass. Trail is Moderately Difficult. Sharp rocks near the top may cut tires. One short section of narrow shelf road often remains snow covered into early July. After the snow clears, the trail is suitable for RZR’s. Do not attempt if there is ANY snow in the road on this section.*** As you descend the pass, follow the trail and stay on the far right rim of Mirror Lake - only cross if other vehicles are also doing so.

Your trip begins in St. Elmo and is about 25 miles rounds trip ( 5 hours ). Explore the quaint town & historical buildings.

No trip to Tincup is complete without a stop at Frenchy’s - perfect for lunch or a homemade piece of pie!

Fall Foliage Fun Ride - Bigfoot's Favorite!

This scenic route becomes even more breathtaking during the fall foliage & changing colors! Cruise the trail and experience the glowing aspens, crisp mountain air, and timberline bursting with a golden glow! Marshall Pass is a gravel road that can be enjoyed by all likes of adventurers!

A short 20 minute drive from Salida, this route is perfect for all types of riders. As you approach the top of the pass there will be restrooms on the right side of the road. Nearby you can explore a historic cattlemen’s cabin ( perfect place for a picnic lunch )! Stay on Marshall Pass Rd (200) and as you cross onto the west side of the pass, beware that it is rutted in places and can get slippery when wet - so take it at a slower pace. This road will lead you to Sargents where there is a gas station. Note: This is the furthest that you can continue on this route and we recommend turning around about 5 miles after crossing onto the west side of the pass.

Full trip-length - to Sargents & back - is 56 miles ( 5 hours ).

Epic RZR Ride: Old Monarch Pass, Pitkin & Alpine Tunnel

Not all trails need to be tough! This route offers a scenic, well-graded drive over a historic pass before dropping into the woods and entering wide-open Waunita Park. Continue north to the Town of Pitkin, then onward toward Hancock Pass, where the terrain becomes rocky but manageable. Follow the pass to the short spur that leads directly to the Alpine Tunnel. Trail starts at Old Monarch Pass off of Highway 50 & is 85 miles round trip ( 5 - 6 hours )

Take your tastebuds on an adventure & stop by the Bonton Bistro for a wide range of lunch / dinner options - found inside the historic Pitkin Hotel. Trail is easy going + family friendly.

The Alpine Tunnel was once the highest railroad tunnel in the world. At an altitude of 11,523 feet, it was the first tunnel to be built through the Continental Divide. Beyond the west portal exit of the tunnel, stood the alpine Tunnel Station, the highest railroad station in the nation; as well as a turntable, water tank, stone boarding house, and engine house that was large enough to house six engines.

Adventure to the Alpine Tunnel via Hancock Pass

Hancock trail connects riders from St. Elmo to Alpine Tunnel via the 12,140-foot Hancock Pass. This route follows the old 1880s railroad grade, passing historic structures & leading to the Alpine Tunnel for a glimpse of Colorado's mining past.

Trail is Moderate to Difficult: Most of the trail is easy wide road. At the top of Hancock Pass, riders will experience very rocky and sharp terrain - suitable for RZR’s as long as this section is slow-going. Do not attempt if snow is present.

The Alpine Tunnel, once the world’s highest at 11,523 feet, was the first to cross the Continental Divide. When completed, the 1,772-foot tunnel became the most expensive narrow-gauge railroad tunnel of its time, with a station & facilities at its west portal near Hancock Pass.

This route starts in St. Elmo & is about 35 miles round trip ( 6 / 7 hours ).

HANDCOCK TRAIL connects St. Elmo to Pitkin via the 12,140-foot Hancock Pass. After taking in the views, descend to Brittle Silver Basin, on through to Pitkin. Hancock Pass & Alpine Tunnel Road follow the old 1880s railroad grade, passing historic structures and leading to the Alpine Tunnel for a glimpse of Colorado’s mining past. Take your tastebuds on an adventure & stop by the Bonton Bistro for a wide range of lunch / dinner options - found inside the historic Pitkin Hotel.

TINCUP PASS takes you directly though Mirror Lake before leading you to the historic town of Tincup. Here you can explore the quaint town and all of it’s historical buildings! Many original cabins have been restored and are used each summer—be sure to stop at Frenchy’s for lunch or a slice of pie!

After your ride, take time to visit St. Elmo, a popular Colorado ghost town where you can hand feel chipmunks - visit the General Store for seeds!
