The differences between ATVs and UTVs
Most people have at least heard of ATVs, but UTVs are less well known. While both types of vehicles will give you excellent performance on unpaved roads and trails, they are meant to handle different kinds of problems.
An ATV (all-terrain vehicle) is generally meant to seat one person. The controls for an ATV are similar to a motorcycle: you control your direction with handlebars, and the speed is controlled by a throttle thereupon. Equipment storage on an ATV will likely be very limited due to the size of the machine.
UTVs, however, operate more like cars, with a gas pedal, a brake, and a steering wheel. A UTV (utility terrain vehicle) is for driving off-road in places where access via truck is impractical or impossible. Another difference is that ATVs are meant more for recreational purposes, while UTVs are typically used in work settings. UTVs also usually have quite a bit more storage capability. They will often be used to deliver supplies and equipment to remote areas.
